Marijuana as is commonly known by its other names such as weed, ganja, pot, etc is a plant whose leaves have psychoactive properties and medicinal uses. The plant is mainly of two types namely the cannabis sativa and the cannabis indica. The plants usually grow about to 3 to 8 feet tall and the chemical that is present in the buds is THC or tetrahydrocannabinol which has the psychoactive properties. The other component is made of CBD or cannabidiol which has the medicinal uses. People have been smoking marijuana since ancient times and can be found in every major culture and religion. People smoke the bud for recreational, therapeutic and medicinal purposes. The plant is also believed to aid in meditation and make one more connected with the world. The high that it gives makes it very popular among individuals. However, governments have identified some potential risks associated with taking the herb and therefore it is banned in many countries.
The mind altering plant
People usually cut the bud of the plant into small pieces and roll it in a smoking paper or cigarette. The oil from the bud can also be extracted and used in cooking for example in weed brownies. People also smoke the bud in glass pipes or bongs or in chillums. Some people also mix it with tobacco and smoke it. The bud is very potent and gives the user visual hallucinations. Marijuana is said to calm the mind and help in one’s spirituality. Marijuana can also be ingested by marijuana patients by vaping the bud in a vaporizer so that harmful parts can be eliminated and only the THC and CBD is absorbed. Marijuana is also one of the most abused drugs in the world and makes up for 77 percent of the world’s drug money. Hashish is a kind of resin that is extracted from the buds. Since hashish is made up of entirely THC crystals, it is said to be more potent than marijuana.
Marijuana and drug abuse
Marijuana is known for its mind altering highs which it gives to the user. People can experience it within minutes of smoking it. The effects include an increase in heart rate, lessened balance and coordination, a dreamy state of mind, etc. The effects may heighten to a peak within 30 minutes after which they start to wear off. Weed highs can last for as long as 1 to 2 hours at a stretch. Marijuana sales have boomed over the years with some states in the US legalizing it like Colorado.
